Social Media Influence is a hot topic these days. Recently, Klout raised millons of dollars to figure out a way to measure influence on Social Networks. I have been wondering lately if there is a effective way to measure Influence on Twitter, apart from recent trending methods like Klout Score, Twitter Grader etc. Going back to old metrics, measuring traffic to website is widely used KPI for evaluating a marketing campaign’s performance.

Dan Zarrella created a simple “Followers to Clicks” conversation rate to measure influence on Twitter. I decided to run a small experiment to see if I could find out the Influence of Indian Celebrities on Twitter. By analysing the bit.ly stats of links posted by Indian Celebrities on Twitter, I found that Deepika Padukone is the most influential celebrity on Twitter, followed by Karan Johar & Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

We run a software product startup out of Bangalore that provides SaaS based Social Media Monitoring solutions to brands and agencies. Not surprisingly, we do monitor our own brand using our monitoring platform. We are a relatively unknown company so not many people talk about us on a day-to-day basis. But whenever we find conversations about our brand, we hang onto every word that our customers, prospective customers or industry stalwarts have to say about us. A couple of times we have even captured feedback from our prospective customers about where they found our monitoring platform lacking (after trying it out) and what needs to be improved. Although, it disappoints us to lose a prospective customer but we appreciate their feedback and use that to improve our monitoring platform.

Recently, our monitoring platform captured a tweet about Beevolve that was quite disturbing.

We combed through all our emails, trial accounts, existing customers to see if he or the agency he claims to represent (McCann, New York) ever signed up to use our monitoring platform. Not surprisingly, he had never tried our monitoring platform or interacted with us in the past. At this point, we had two options – to let it go or to trace him back to see if had any vested interests in maligning Beevolve.

We had internal discussion on this and some of us were of the opinion that he didn’t have a large enough twitter following to influence a lot of people and his opinion (about Beevolve or other competitors that he has talked about in his timeline) will not matter much in the larger scheme of things. But at the same time, he was actively trying to talk a prospective customer out of trying out our monitoring platform by using slanderous language. We didn’t mind if people criticized the shortcomings in our monitoring platform but he was trying to malign our reputation and we could never stand that. So we decided to find out more about him but reached a dead end pretty soon as googling his name or his agency’s name did not give any solid clues.

We often talk to our prospective clients about how important it is to monitor their reputation online and the need to respond to attacks on their brand’s reputation. And here we were with our reputation being attacked by a person? with possibly vested interest and trying to figure out a strategy to stop this kind of vile attacks from happening again. The anonymity cloak offered by certain social networks provides impetus to people like Devron Charles to do this again and again. It was a surprising realization that although we could monitor these attacks through our software and respond back, we couldn’t do anything to stop it from happening again. Even though it makes us sound helpless against these kind of attacks, we have actually figured out a way to handle such attacks in the future. Next time, a troll uses baseless allegations about Beevolve to scare prospective customers, we will point the prospective customers to this blog post and ask them if the troll is a real person so they can decide for themselves.

Special thanks to @mikerbrt for trying to find @devron_c’s real identity.

Social Media sites like Twitter, Facebook and Youtube are growing their userbase exponentially in India. According to Alootechie, the number of Facebook users in India was at 8M in March 2010. In a little over six months, the number of Indian users have doubled and now stand at 15.5 million. With the proliferation of cheaper smart phones and start of 3G services in India, the rate of growth of internet population and thereby, adoption of Social Media sites should receive a significant boost.

Since Beevolve provides complete Social Media solutions to brands and agencies, we decided to deep dive into the Indian userbase to better understand the customer segments that brands can target on Facebook.

Surprisingly, most of the Indian users on Facebook come from National Capital Region (Delhi, Noida). Bangalore, with its large IT population, occupies a distant fourth position.

More than 80% of the userbase on Facebook is below 30 years.

The male-female ratio is highly skewed towards male but is not quite surprising given that the male-female ratio for online population in India is similarly skewed.

The data was collected from Facebook.com around Oct-Nov, 2010.

Times of India Online (hereafter, referred to as TOI), world’s number one english newspaper website (in terms of page views) recently revamped their website completely. The complete revamp brought in a lot of feedback from its users. One of the core strengths of Beevolve is the ability to analyze sentiment around topics, brands, products, markets or even people. We decided to put our sentiment analysis technology to use by analyzing this feedback to see if we could come up with interesting insights.

We gathered unstructured comments from twitter and a forum Times of India set up to gather feedback about the revamped website. Over a course of a few days, the forum got around 5000+ comments. The user comments came from a lot of different countries – even from Iran, Russia and Pakistan. Here is a graph that shows the top countries by user comments.

User Comments By Country

The system generated tag clouds of the opinion words used to describe the old design and the new design.

Tag Cloud for New Interface for Times of India

The sentiment analysis system parsed the comments to analyse and summarize what the users of TOI preferred. Based on analyzing the user preference expressed in the comments, it seems users prefer the old design over new design by more than a 2:1 margin.

User Preference for Times of India

Apart from analyzing for user preference, the system analyzed the general sentiment for the old as well as the new design. The commenters had only positive things to say about the old design. However, 20% of the total comments for the new design were negative. Here is a breakdown of the Sentiment Analysis for the old and the new design.
